Mark William Stephenson, a Delaware native and graduate of Alexis I. DuPont High School, was Senator Joe Biden's 1976 appointee to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. There, he earned top academic honors each year, commanded a Cadet Company, and received the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's award for excellence in Earth, Space, and Computer Sciences. Three days after graduating, he married his high school sweetheart, Debbie Nowland.
Following flight training, Mark became Executive Officer of the 15th Military Intelligence Battalion at Fort Hood, leading reconnaissance missions across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Cuba. He later served in Korea as Operations Officer for the 3rd Military Intelligence Battalion, directing aerial intelligence operations on the peninsula.
Mark earned both a Master of Science and an Engineers Degree inAeronautics and Astronautics from MIT, then returned to West Point to teach Aerodynamics and Flight Labs and lead several aviation and engineering organizations. After graduating from the U.S, Naval Test Pilot School, he supported over 30 Space Shuttle missions as Orbiter Lead Engineer, advancing astronaut life-support, crew escape systems, and global rescue coordination.
At The Boeing Company, Mark led the first U.S. Space Station flight (Unity Node l) and managed development of the U.S. Laboratory Module (Destiny) and other major International Space Station elements. He later oversaw Boeing's satellite assembly division in Los Angeles and contributed as
Program Executive to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Army EMARSS, and Air Force KC-46A Pegasus programs. His final role at Boeing was Vice President of Commercial and Military Aircraft Structures in Wichita, Kansas.
Since retiring, Mark has served as President of the West Point Society of DELMARVA, leading it to ten consecutive Distinguished Society Awards. He and Debbie are proud members of the West Point Henry H. "Hap" Arnold Lifetime Giving Society.
