​Col. Frank Smith



Col. Frank Smith was a decorated United States Air Force officer whose distinguished career in military aviation spans more than two decades of leadership, technical excellence, and valor in service to his country.

A 1958 graduate of the United States Military Academy at Wes! Point, Colonel Smith began his Air Force career in pilot training, serving from 1958 to 1960. From 1960 to 1965, he was assigned to the 509th Bombardment Wing, where he developed his operational expertise and leadership skills.

In 1966, Colonel Smith attended the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, marking the beginning of his long association with flight testing and aviation advancement. Following this, he was deployed to the 388th
Tactical Fighter Wing at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand, where he flew combat missions during the Vietnam War. His extraordinary courage and airmanship were recognized in 1967 with the Silver Star for Gallantry in Action and the Distinguished Flying Cross for Extraordinary Achievement in Aerial Flight.

From 1967 to 1968, Colonel Smith served with the Air Force Flight Test Center, followed by attendance at the Navy Command and Staff School in 1968. Between 1969 and I9l3,he was stationed at Headquarters Fifth Air Force in Japan, continuing his leadership in operational and testing roles. His later assignments included the Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base (1973-1915), the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea (1915-1976), and the 3246th Test Wing and Headquarters Air Force Systems
Command at Eglin Air Force Base (1976-1981). From 1981 until his retirement in 1984, he commanded the 6943rd, Electronic Security Squadron at Fort Meade, Maryland.

Colonel Smith retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1984 with over 3,000 flying hours and an enduring legacy of professionalism, courage, and technical mastery. Following retirement, he enjoyed time with his family and pursued his passion for the outdoors through a commercial crabbing business.
