Lucy Chorman is a 17-year-old private pilot whose passion, discipline, and vision for the future make her an exceptional candidate for this youth aviation award. At such a young age, she has already logged over 150 flight hours in a Cessna 172, demonstrating not only technical skill, but also a deep commitment to aviation.
Lucy’s journey in aviation reflects her strong work ethic and determination. Earning her private pilot license required countless hours of study, preparation, and perseverance—qualities she continues to display as she works toward her instrument rating and future certifications. What makes Lucy especially deserving of this award is her purpose-driven vision for her future. She aspires to become both an elementary education teacher and a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), combining her love of education with her passion for flying. Lucy is not only focused on her own success, but also on giving back—helping future students learn, grow, and gain confidence both in the classroom and in the cockpit.
Stephen West earned the rank of Eagle Scout which takes multiple years of commitnent and dedication. As a cadet in AIJROTC he was seiected as Cadet of the Year for the entire state and was seiected to the AFJROTC Summer Fiight Academy, a highly competitive program for Delaware students interested in aviation. Stephen was one of 28 selected and finished in the top his class. While in ROTC he was appointed to several leadership roles specifically as the Operations Squadron Commander and as the White Rifle. Being a former AFJROTC cadet in high school, supervising and training your peers is one of the hardest things to do because you are all learning how and what to do along with all the normal high school stuff. Stephen did this with ease, knowing when to turn on being a cadet supervisor and when to be a normal high school kid. Due to his academic achievements, leadership qualities and community service commitnent, he was inducted into the National Honor Society.
Stephen is currently enrolled in the aviation program at Delaware State University, where he has eamed his private pilot license, commercial and instrument ratrngs. He works as the airport operations dispatcher where he manages the flight schedule and other numerous tasks to ensure he and his fellow students stay on track to accomplish their goals.
